Managing Direct Debit

Managing Direct Debits on your bank account couldn't be quicker or simpler, all it takes are a few simple checks.

Checklist

  • You should have been notified in advance of any changes to amounts to be paid or the payment dates (normally 10 working days in advance)
  • Always check your bank statement. Direct Debits are usually shown with a DD alongside the payment. Make sure the amount and date paid agree with the advance notice received
  • If you are offered a choice of payment dates when setting up a Direct Debit Instruction, choose a date that best suits your cashflow, for example, just after your salary is paid, so that you can be sure there will be money in your account to cover your bills. That way you won't become overdrawn
  • The Direct Debit Guarantee ensures that, in the unlikely event of a mistake, you will receive a full refund from your bank or building society.
