Direct Debit now available online for TV licence payers

Paying for your TV licence has now become even easier as TV Licensing today revealed a new online facility allowing people to sign up to pay by Direct Debit via the TV Licensing website.

Currently over 52 % of licensed TV viewers pay by Direct Debit and on average over 16,000 people buy their licence online each month. This new online Direct Debit facility comes as a direct result of the growing use of the internet by people wanting to pay their bills online.

Vanessa Wood, TV Licensing spokesperson said: "We are constantly looking for ways to make it easier for people to buy their licence. This new facility means the increasing number of people who manage their finances both online and through Direct Debit can arrange to spread the cost of their licence from their PC - giving them one less thing to worry about."

Fergus Rose, Head of Marketing at Bacs, said: "Direct Debit not only takes the hassle factor out of paying regular bills, but also helps you to keep track of your monthly outgoings. It’s already quick and easy to set up, but with TV Licensing’s new online service it’s even more straightforward."

A TV Licence currently costs £116. If paid by monthly direct debit, the cost is spread into manageable amounts of around £10 a month. Over 52% of licence payers currently pay by Direct Debit. Anyone wanting to set up a Direct Debit online can log on to www.tvlicensing.co.uk/dd

It is illegal to use or install TV equipment to receive broadcasting programmes (as per recruitment story - please use cleared lines), anyone caught without a licence risks a trip to court and a fine of up to £1,000. Last year TV Licensing caught over 400,000 licence fee evaders.

Research has shown that around 50% of homes in the UK already have online access, and the Government has pledged that, by 2008, that figure will be 100%. Furthermore, businesses are increasingly transacting online as an effective way to interact with their customers.
