Bacs celebrates charities' efforts in driving Direct Debit

The British Red Cross, RSPCA and Thistle Foundation are all celebrating after being presented with a 2006 Bacs Direct Debit Charity Award at a dedicated ceremony last week.

Held at The Third Sector Forum in Oxford, and organised by Bacs, the industry body behind Direct Debit and Bacs Direct Credit, the awards recognise the hard work and efforts of fundraising teams to encourage Direct Debit take up by donors.

The winners received the following accolades:

  • RSPCA (22 Kb PDF) won the Innovation Award, for the most creative promotion of Direct Debit
  • British Red Cross (28 Kb PDF) received the Achievement Award, demonstrating the largest year-on-year increase in Direct Debit take up
  • Thistle Foundation (28 Kb PDF) walked away with the Best Practice Award, having shown the most significant improvements in customer satisfaction as a result of offering Direct Debit as an alternative payment method
  • In addition, the South West Coast Path Association and British Red Cross both received a commendation, in the Achievement and Innovation categories respectively.

This is the second consecutive success for British Red Cross, which won a Bacs Direct Debit Award for innovation at the ceremony last year.

Liz Williams, Senior Campaigns Manager at the British Red Cross, said: "Having a regular income through Direct Debit donations is highly predictable and in the long-term produces returns unparalleled by any other form of giving. Winning a Bacs Charity Direct Debit Award recognises the hard work undertaken by both our fundraisers, and the team responsible for processing Direct Debits."

Michael Chambers, Managing Director of Bacs, said: "We are pleased to acknowledge the efforts of UK fundraisers who work hard to generate money for worthwhile causes.

Over half of the regular charitable donations from British adults (53%) are now made by Direct Debit, making it the most popular form of regular giving today. We look forward to helping more charities increase the number of donations they receive by Direct Debit, and in doing so, raise more funds for those in need."
