Online sort code checker

The Payments Council has created an online sort code checker enabling you to check that the sort code you are sending a Bacs Direct Credit payment to, or collecting a Direct Debit from, can accept these payment types. It also includes information for other UK payment schemes.

The sort code checker uses the latest industry data, which is updated weekly, in line with industry practice.

Why is up to date sort code data important?

The sort code data used by the UK payments industry is being updated constantly to reflect bank and other financial institution changes. The pace of change is quicker now, driven for example by the increased use of online banking. Using data which is out of date can cause inconvenience to customers as their payment might be delayed or not processed, and it places a cost burden on businesses, individuals and banks as they rectify the problems which can arise.

In keeping with the Payment Council’s commitment to ensuring payment efficiency, the sort code checker has been developed to help all customers and is for the use of personal and corporate customers.
