We are serious about tackling our carbon emissions. Our office in Thomas More Square has achieved a very good BREEAM rating of 57.32% (3 out of 4 stars) and has been categorised as a ‘B’ under HM Government’s Energy Performance Asset Rating.
Thanks to the commitment of our site managers, Land Securities, waste from the office goes either to recycling or to a ‘Waste-To-Energy’ site: no waste goes to landfill. We have actively measured our carbon footprint since 2009 and have consistently cut our CO2 emissions since then. We have a team of people who are active in finding even more ways to reduce our environmental impact.
Community and the environment
In 2012, Bacs demonstrated its environmental commitment by becoming a carbon neutral company, a status we maintained until 2017 when, we are proud to report, we went even further and became carbon neutral +. We achieved this in conjunction with leading carbon management and sustainability organisation Carbon Footprint Ltd. The project involves an annual assessment of the carbon emissions resulting from the energy consumption of Bacs and the Current Account Switch Service (by our infrastructure provider) and all business transport and head office energy usage associated with Bacs as an organisation.
We offset the carbon by purchasing carbon credits in Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) projects. We have supported projects to prevent deforestation in Brazil (REDD project), borehole water purification in Uganda, and the supply of environmentally efficient cook stoves in Kenya.
Over and above that, we have demonstrated our commitment to our UK environment by funding the planting of more than 1000 trees since 2013.
